What Supports Are Included in NDIS Home Care? A Complete Guide to Daily Living Assistance at Home

When you receive NDIS funding, understanding what supports are available for home care can be overwhelming.
You might wonder: What help can I actually get? Who provides it? How do I access it?

At United For Care, we believe home care should be simple to understand — and even easier to access.
This guide explains what NDIS home care covers, how it helps you live independently, and how to get the right supports for your needs.

What Is NDIS Home Care?

NDIS Home Care refers to the services funded under your NDIS plan that support you to live safely and independently in your own home.
These supports are usually funded under the Core Supports budget — specifically under "Assistance with Daily Living."

They help you with everyday tasks that might be difficult because of your disability.
The goal is to empower you to live as independently as possible, while also maintaining dignity, safety, and choice in your daily life.

Key Supports Included in NDIS Home Care

NDIS home care is not one-size-fits-all. It is designed around your personal needs, goals, and living situation.
Here are the main types of supports commonly included:

1. Personal Care Support

This covers assistance with:

  • Showering, bathing, and grooming
  • Dressing and undressing
  • Toileting and continence care
  • Mobility support (moving around the home safely)
  • Eating and drinking assistance

Personal care is often provided by trained disability support workers who respect your independence and preferences.

2. Domestic Assistance

NDIS home care can fund help with household tasks, including:

  • Cleaning and vacuuming
  • Washing dishes
  • Laundry and ironing
  • Changing bed linen
  • Light gardening (like watering plants)

These supports make sure your home remains clean, safe, and comfortable to live in.

3. Meal Preparation and Nutrition Support

If preparing meals is difficult, support workers can:

  • Help plan meals
  • Assist with cooking
  • Ensure food safety and healthy eating

You might also be eligible for services like delivered meals under certain conditions if meal preparation support is in your plan.

4. Assistance with Medication Management

While medication administration typically requires a nurse, disability support workers can:

  • Prompt you to take medication
  • Record medication prompts
  • Assist with preparing dosages (where appropriate)

Where higher clinical needs are involved, you might also access community nursing care through your NDIS plan.

5. Overnight Support

If you need help during the night, your plan may include:

  • Sleepover support (where a support worker sleeps at your home and is available if needed)
  • Active overnight support (where a worker stays awake to assist you as required)

This support is essential for participants with mobility challenges, epilepsy, or high personal care needs.

6. Support with Building Daily Living Skills

NDIS Home Care isn’t just about doing things for you — it’s also about building your skills.
You might receive support to:

  • Develop cooking or cleaning skills
  • Build independence in personal care
  • Improve budgeting or household management

Skill-building supports are focused on helping you live with greater autonomy over time.

Examples of How Home Care Helps Participants

Home care under the NDIS can look different for everyone.
Here are some examples:

  • Emma, who has limited mobility, receives daily assistance with showering, dressing, meal preparation, and light cleaning.
  • James, living with an intellectual disability, has weekly support to manage laundry, shopping, and preparing simple meals.
  • Aisha, who uses a wheelchair, accesses overnight support to assist with toileting and repositioning safely during the night.

The flexibility of NDIS home care means your supports are tailored to your real needs — not a generic service list.

How to Access Home Care Through Your NDIS Plan

To receive home care services under the NDIS, your plan must include funding for:

  • Core Supports (specifically Assistance with Daily Living)
    • Not many people know that core supports can also be used for SIL Accommodation. Learn more here
  • Capacity Building Supports (if you’re developing independent living skills)

If your current plan doesn’t have the funding you need, you can request a Plan Review and provide evidence — such as an Occupational Therapy Functional Assessment — showing why these supports are reasonable and necessary.

United For Care can work with you, your support coordinator, and allied health professionals to help gather the right information and advocate for appropriate supports.
