RiseUp Together: Get Lifted by the Power of Community Participation

Life’s more rewarding when we live it together. This philosophy lies at the heart of community participation—a concept that transforms lives through connection, discovery, and empowerment. For people living with disabilities, being part of a community and exploring new activities isn’t just about finding something to do—it’s about building confidence, gaining independence, and creating lifelong memories.

At United for Care, we’ve seen first-hand how trying new things and meeting new people can spark joy, unlock potential, and build a stronger sense of belonging. With RiseUp, our innovative community participation programme, we’re not just opening doors—we’re helping people step through them into a world of possibilities.

Why Community Participation Matters

Community participation offers more than just social opportunities; it’s a cornerstone of personal growth. For many, it means finding a tribe, discovering new passions, and dreaming bigger about what they can achieve.

Here are some of the life-changing benefits that community participation offers:

  • Overcoming Isolation: Many people with disabilities experience loneliness and social isolation. Participating in community activities helps them develop meaningful relationships, providing a crucial sense of connection.
  • Building Resilience: Trying new things, even when they seem out of reach, builds confidence and equips individuals to tackle life’s challenges.
  • Discovering Purpose: Whether it’s through volunteering, learning a new skill, or pursuing a creative passion, community participation helps uncover hidden strengths and passions.
  • Strengthening Independence: The skills and experiences gained through trying new things create a foundation for a more self-directed and empowered life.

Katie Orfanos, Senior Program Manager at RiseUp, puts it best:

"Community isn’t just about being in the same room as other people. It’s about discovering who you are through shared experiences. It’s about finding your voice, exploring your interests, and knowing that you belong."

The Joy of Trying New Activities

Imagine discovering that you have a flair for photography, the ability to whip up a delicious dish, or the determination to tackle a 5K hike. Trying new activities opens doors to creativity, confidence, and connection.

Here’s why stepping out of your comfort zone matters:

  1. Igniting Creativity: From digital art to music, creative outlets can be deeply therapeutic and energising.
  1. Boosting Confidence: Learning something new proves that growth is always possible.
  1. Creating Memories: Shared activities, from group excursions to cooking classes, lead to moments that stay with you forever.

Katie shares, “I’ve seen people come alive when they try something they never imagined doing. It’s not just about the activity itself—it’s about proving to yourself that you can do anything you set your mind to.”

The Magic of Meeting New People

Having the ability to make new connections and branch out socially can have a life-changing impact. Many people living with disabilities face social isolation due to physical, sensory, or cognitive barriers. Meeting others with shared experiences creates a sense of belonging and reduces feelings of loneliness.

It also provides a valuable opportunity for peer-to-peer support. Sharing experiences, challenges, and coping strategies with others who understand can offer invaluable emotional support, advice, and encouragement.

"When people meet others who truly ‘get it,’ it’s like the world opens up," says Katie. "Our participants tell us all the time that the friendships they’ve made through RiseUp have given them strength and courage they didn’t know they had."

United for Care’s Transformative Community Participation Program

At United for Care, we believe in unlocking each person’s unique potential. That’s why we created RiseUp, a community participation service designed to connect people, inspire growth, and build independence.

What RiseUp Offers:

  • A World of Opportunities: With activities ranging from cooking classes to sports, travel training, and digital arts, there’s something for everyone.
  • Skill Building: Gain independence with practical life skills like budgeting, resume writing, and navigating public transport.
  • Volunteering and Employment Support: Build experience, give back, and take steps toward meaningful employment.
  • Creative and Cultural Exploration: Express yourself through music, photography, or art, and discover your community through outings to museums and festivals.
  • Health and Wellbeing: Stay active, learn mindfulness techniques, and embrace a balanced lifestyle.

Katie explains, “RiseUp is about meeting you where you’re at and helping you take the next step. It’s not just a programme; it’s a gateway to adventure, connection, and independence.”

RiseUp: Experiences Tailored to You

RiseUp isn’t a one-size-fits-all service. It’s designed with your goals, interests, and aspirations in mind. With activities spanning 8–12 weeks, participants are supported in developing their unique skills and achieving personal milestones.

Our Approach:

  • Person-Centred: Every participant’s goals and interests are our priority.
  • Inclusive: Open to all disabilities, RiseUp provides tailored experiences to suit everyone.
  • Community-Focused: Whether it’s volunteering, exploring cultural landmarks, or making friends at a cooking class, RiseUp connects you with your community in meaningful ways.

At RiseUp, we’ve seen incredible transformations. Participants who once doubted their abilities are now thriving—becoming more independent, confident, and connected.

Katie reflects, “Every time someone takes that first step—whether it’s trying a new recipe or taking public transport alone for the first time—it’s a moment of triumph. We’re here to celebrate every single one of those wins.”
