Take Charge of Your NDIS Journey with a Functional Capacity Assessment

Navigating the NDIS can feel like stepping into the unknown, but you don’t have to do it alone. A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is here to help you understand your needs, access the right supports, and confidently move forward. Whether you're new to the NDIS, preparing for a plan reassessment, or facing a major life change, an FCA can give you clarity and direction.

What is a Functional Capacity Assessment?

A Functional Capacity Assessment is usually conducted by an occupational therapist but can also be carried out by other allied health professionals such as physiotherapists or social workers.

An FCA is designed to give you a comprehensive picture of how you manage daily life across different settings—at home, in the community, at work, or in school. It results in a detailed report that highlights your strengths, identifies areas where support may be needed, and provides recommendations for services that can help you achieve your goals and greater independence.

If you're wondering how to cover the cost, don't worry. Your NDIS plan has you covered. Funding for an FCA comes under the 'Improved Daily Living' category within your Capacity Building Supports Budget.

Why an FCA Is a Game-Changer for Your NDIS Plan

1. Gain Clarity on How to Use Your Funding

Your FCA report will outline supports you might not have even known existed, giving you a roadmap to spend your funding wisely. Whether it's assistive technology, therapy services, or community participation programs, the report helps you make informed decisions to improve your daily life.

2. Make Your Story Clear to Others

Sharing your FCA report with your support team, service providers, and even family can help them better understand your unique needs. It takes the guesswork out of support planning and ensures everyone is on the same page.

3. Prepare for Your Plan Reassessment

An FCA is an excellent tool to help you review your current supports before your next NDIS plan reassessment. It provides up-to-date insights into what’s working and what’s not, helping you advocate for adjustments to your funding if needed.

4. Plan for Life’s Big Changes

Major life transitions—such as moving out of home, starting a job, or transitioning from school to work—come with new challenges. An FCA ensures you’re well-prepared by identifying the supports you’ll need to thrive in your new environment

What to Expect from a Functional Capacity Assessment

An FCA usually takes place over several sessions and includes three key components:

  • Personal Interviews: Your OT (or other professional) will have a friendly chat with you and/or your carers to understand your daily routines, challenges, and goals.
  • Environmental Assessment: This involves observing how you navigate your home, workplace, or educational settings to identify any barriers or areas for improvement.
  • Comprehensive Report: The final outcome is a detailed report that captures your support needs and offers personalised recommendations for achieving greater independence.

Your assessor will explore areas such as:

  • How you manage daily tasks like personal care and household chores.
  • How you get around your home and community.
  • Whether assistive technology could enhance your mobility and independence.
  • Your work or study aspirations and any challenges you face.
  • Your ability to engage in hobbies, social activities, and personal interests.

How Much Does an FCA Cost?

The cost of an FCA can vary based on your circumstances, but you can generally expect to pay around $2,000. This covers the face-to-face assessment and time spent developing your personalised report. Your NDIS plan can cover this cost through the ‘Improved Daily Living’ section of your Capacity Building Supports Budget.
