At United for Care, we pride ourselves on creating a diverse and inclusive community where everyone can thrive. This is made possible by passionate people like Annalise, a dedicated support worker in our Bondi Junction team. Annalise’s journey is a story of resilience, commitment, and the profound impact a disability support worker can have.
From Ireland to Australia with a Passion for Care
Annalise's career began in Ireland, where she worked in aged care, primarily supporting elderly people living with dementia and those in respite with physical and mental disabilities.
Her move to Australia marked a new chapter, as she aimed to broaden her skills and work in a new environment. Living with a hearing impairment herself, Annalise was driven by a personal understanding of the challenges faced by people living with disabilities and a deep desire to help them lead more fulfilling lives.
“I wanted to work as a disability support worker because I understand the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and am passionate about helping them lead fulfilling lives. This new setting has provided the perfect opportunity to expand my expertise and continue making a positive impact,” says Annalise.
Overcoming Hurdles
Annalise’s journey was not without its hurdles. She faced significant challenges during her job search, including the high demand for aged care and support worker roles, and the lack of a car after her recent move. But she remained undeterred.
“Networking through social media platforms, particularly Facebook, played a crucial role in securing an interview and ultimately landing a position that aligned with my career goals. I am thankful to United for Care for helping me to overcome my professional challenges and offering me the opportunity to work in a field I’m passionate about,” Annalise shares.
A Day in the Life at Bondi Junction
At United for Care’s Bondi Junction property, Annalise’s day revolves around building meaningful relationships with her participants. She tailors her support to their individual needs, assisting with daily tasks such as laundry, cleaning, attending appointments, grocery shopping, and promoting healthier eating habits.
“My focus is on providing continuous support and encouragement while promoting their independence. I take the time to understand their goals, interests, and the challenges they face,” Annalise explains.
Connecting Through Shared Experiences
Working with a participant who is also hearing impaired has been a rewarding experience for Annalise. They have developed a close bond through sign language, with Annalise learning Auslan and teaching Irish Sign Language in return.
It has been incredible to see the staff promoting inclusivity by encouraging sign language learning. There’s never a day that goes by where she doesn’t make me laugh or smile,” Annalise says.
Previously, public settings presented a significant hurdle for the participant due to communication difficulties and social anxiety. However, with the team's support and encouragement, she’s begun managing tasks independently, such as shopping solo, interacting with customer service staff, and handling appointments.
Annalise says she demonstrates “Incredible determination and hasn’t let her hearing impairment hold her back, instead finding innovative ways to communicate - writing on paper and texting.”.
Her dedication extends beyond these daily tasks, says Annalise, “She’s actively pursuing personal goals like finding employment and prioritising her health through exercise and healthier eating. Witnessing her newfound confidence and personal growth has been truly inspiring.”.
Transforming Lives, Professionally & Personally
Annalise’s role at United for Care has had a profound impact on her life. Professionally, it has expanded her understanding of mental health support and the diverse needs of participants. Personally, witnessing the positive changes in the lives of participants has been incredibly rewarding.
“Seeing their progress and their growing independence is a huge win for me. I love seeing how comfortable and open they are with the staff,” Annalise reflects.
Looking to the future, Annalise is excited about the possibility of furthering her education and continuing to deepen her passion in this field. She is grateful to United for Care and her Practice Leader, Aideen, for their support, saying “I’m with the right people to grow and develop professionally.”.
“I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work with an amazing team and wonderful participants. I love what I do and hope to continue down this path. A special thanks to Aideen, who has helped me get to where I am today,” Annalise concludes.
