The Paralympics are here, and so too is the inspiration to get your blood pumping and try a new sport! Â
It’s a time when the world’s eyes are glued to extraordinary athletic achievements, but the truth is, sports aren’t just for elite athletes. They are a powerful tool for everyone to enhance their health, happiness and social well-being. Â
From boosting your mood to building strength, the benefits of sports are far-reaching. It’s about discovering your potential, finding new passions, and feeling empowered, all of which is a recipe for maximum life enjoyment. Â
So, pull your goggles on, clip on those skis, and climb into your rowing boat (but maybe not all at once!), because it’s time to discover the benefits of taking up a new sport. We’ll even give you some practical tips and tricks about getting started so you can get out of the blocks fast! Â
‍
Feel Like a Champion
Regular exercise is like magic for your body. It helps you develop strength, flexibility, and coordination. Sports are a fun way to build muscle, improve your range of motion, and boost your energy levels. Even when you’ve finished exercising, you’ll feel energised throughout the day. Â
Plus, staying active can help manage long-term health issues, ease aches and pains, and even prevent other health problems from popping up further down the track.
‍
Happy Inside and Out
Sports really can boost your mood. Getting your body moving is a natural way to feel less stressed, anxious, or down. It's like your body's own feel-good factory.
When you exercise, your brain releases special chemicals called endorphins and dopamine. Endorphins are nature's pain reliever and mood booster, while dopamine is the motivation and reward chemical. Together, they create that amazing "runner's high" feeling. So, not only will you feel physically better, but your mental health will get a serious lift too.
Feeling good about yourself starts with feeling good in your body, and sports can help with that. Plus, sharing the experience with others can create amazing friendships and build a sense of companionship, all of which can dramatically enhance your mental well-being. Â
‍
Discover What You’re Capable Of
Sports are a powerful way to build confidence and independence. Â Overcoming sporting challenges can help you develop the mindset needed to face life's larger struggles. It teaches resilience, problem-solving, and the ability to bounce back from setbacks.
When you dedicate yourself to improving and eventually achieve a goal, no matter how big or small, it works wonders for your self-esteem. These little victories, whether it's sinking that perfect free throw or finishing a tough training session, are an everyday reminder of just how much you’re capable of when you believe in your potential and put the work in. This experience can give you the mindset and tools needed to tackle all areas of life. Â
‍
Find Your Dream Team
One of the most enjoyable things about playing a sport is that it gives you a chance to socialise with like-minded people who share your passion for a particular sport.
Joining a sports team or club is a fantastic way to connect with others and expand your social circle. It can also give you the chance to pick up some hard-earned tips and tricks from other athletes and coaches. Â
Inclusive sports environments are important for creating a welcoming space for everyone. When you feel like you belong, you're more likely to stick with a sport and thrive long term.
‍
The Love of the Game
Most importantly, taking up a sport gives you a chance to fall in love with a new pastime. Sports tend to bring out people’s passionate side and can give you something to pour your heart and soul into. There's a sport out there for everyone. From wheelchair basketball to adaptive surfing, the possibilities are endless. Â
Having a go at different sports is a great way to try new things and build a well-rounded fitness routine. Don't worry about being a superstar athlete – you’re aiming to break a sweat, not the world record! The main goal is to have fun and explore all kinds of ways to stay active.

A Little Real-Life Rugby Inspiration
Jacob Darkin took up wheelchair rugby three years ago. He says getting started in wheelchair sports was a little tricky. “Figuring out which sports I could play, how to qualify for competitions, and finding the right equipment was difficult. Wheelchair Sports New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory was a lifesaver in helping me navigate this process”, Jacob recalls.
For Jacob, sport offers more than just physical activity and a chance to develop new skills. He says “The discipline, routine, and sense of community it provides are just as valuable. It surrounds me with a supportive network and gives me goals I can work toward on a weekly basis.”
Jacob’s advice to anyone keen to take up a new sport is to “explore your options and find what you love. Persevere and don't be afraid to ask for help. Experienced athletes willing to share their knowledge and can help you get going. They were beginners too, and they’re always happy to help someone else discover the joys of a sport they love.”
All Jacob’s hard work and dedication paid off. He proudly says “I stuck with the process and eventually competed at the Wheelchair Rugby National Championships. It was a huge achievement and one of the most exciting times of my life.”
