Learn to Turn Your University Dreams into Reality

University. A word that conjures images of freedom, growth, and endless possibilities. With the right support and planning, higher education can be all that and more for you.

Let's uncover some practical tips that will make your university or TAFE (technical and further education) dream a reality and ensure you live and learn to the fullest.

Understanding Your Strengths and Passions

The first step to university success is self-awareness. Identify your strengths, whether it's creativity, analytical thinking, or strong communication skills. These are your superpowers that will shine through in an academic environment.

It’s also important to pick a subject or skill you're passionate about. This passion ignites a deeper level of engagement, making learning more enjoyable and effective. Your enthusiasm will naturally fuel your motivation, leading to better grades and a more fulfilling all-round university experience.

The NDIS Supports Your Learning Goals

Once you've discovered a subject that ignites your passion, leverage the power of your NDIS plan to support your academic ambitions. Remember, the NDIS was established to empower people living with disabilities to achieve their biggest life goals, and this includes going to university.

Whether it's funding assistive technology to enhance your learning experience, providing support workers to assist with assignments and notetaking, or covering other essential needs like travel, your NDIS plan can help to ensure a successful university journey.

In some cases, the NDIS will even provide funding so that lecturers and teachers can be trained to work with your needs.

Take the time to understand your plan’s potential and work with your NDIS plan manager to maximise its benefits. Be sure to start this process early – it’s essential to have all your supports in place before the course begins.

Resource: The NDIS will consider funding the extra supports needed at university or TAFE to perform your learning activities. You can find out more on the NDIS further education page.

Finding Your Perfect Fit

Choosing the right university is crucial. Consider your academic interests, desired location, and the level of support services offered.

University open days are a fantastic chance to assess the environment and campus culture, helping you find the perfect fit. Here are a few simple tips to help you maximise on the opportunity:

  • Don't be afraid to ask questions. Your lecturers, support staff, and fellow students are there to help. Inquire about available resources, accommodations, and support services. Ask about the accessibility features of your classrooms, libraries, and campus facilities.
  • Take a good look around. Assess the physical layout of your campus. Are there ramps, elevators, and accessible entrances? Are libraries and classrooms equipped with assistive technology like screen readers or captioning systems? Pay attention to the lighting, noise levels, and overall atmosphere of different spaces.

Building a Strong Support Network

Surround yourself with people who believe in you. Your family, friends, and support workers can be invaluable sources of encouragement and practical assistance.

Universities also offer a range of support services, including academic advisors, learning coordinators and counsellors. Don't hesitate to reach out to these people for guidance and advice. Their job is to support you, and they do it passionately.

Most Australian universities and TAFEs also have Disability Liaison Officers (DLOs) who can help you arrange accommodations, access support services, and facilitate communication with academic staff if needed.

Connecting with other students living with disabilities can also create a powerful support network. Sharing experiences and practical advice can make a huge difference in your day-to-day life.

Resource: The Australian Government’s Disability Support Program provides funding to higher-education institutions to support students living with disabilities, often covering the costs of notetakers, interpreters, and assistive technology.

Thriving Academically and Personally

Time management is key to academic success. Develop effective study habits, such as creating schedules, setting goals, and utilising time management tools. Assistive technology can also be a game-changer, helping you with notetaking, reading, or writing.

Building strong relationships with your lecturers is essential. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, seek clarification, or request any accommodations you might need. Your lecturers can be a point of contact, connecting you with other departments, resources and valuable information.

Remember, lecturers are dedicated to the success of their students and will do everything they can to help you flourish.

Enjoy the Full Experience

It’s important to keep in mind that university is more than just academics. It’s also a chance to expand your horizons, discover new passions and enjoy your newfound freedom.

You can’t always have your head in the books, so try to get involved in as many clubs, societies, sports and social activities as possible. This will give you the opportunity to meet new people and explore your interests.

Higher education isn’t just about learning a new subject, it’s about trying new things and learning more about who you really are. You’re not just aiming to come away with a qualification, but also a meaningful life experience and a more clearly defined personal identity.

Back Yourself to Succeed

University has the potential to be a fresh and exciting chapter in your life. With the right mindset, planning, and support, you can achieve your academic goals.

If deep down you yearn for the experience of higher education, but the prospect of starting a course feels a bit daunting, back yourself to succeed. Remember the things that make us a little uncomfortable are often the biggest opportunities for personal growth.

You’ve got dreams, aspirations, and a unique perspective that the world will benefit from. University is the perfect place to nurture these talents and turn them into reality.
